Blue Triteleie ( Triteleia laxa )

The Blue Triteleie ( Triteleia laxa, Syn: Brodiaea laxa ( Benth. ) S.Watson ) is a species of the genus in the subfamily Triteleia Brodiaeoideae.

Features

The Blue Triteleie is a perennial herbaceous plant, the plant height ( 10) reaches 40 to 70 inches. This Geophyt forms onions as outlasting. The leaves are keeled and have a length of 20-40 inches and a width of (rarely to 0.4 ) is usually 0.8 to 2.5 centimeter.

The light blue or deep violet-blue, rarely white perianth has a length of 18-47 millimeters. The stalk of the ovary is two to three times as long as the ovary itself, the stamens are not widened.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Occurrence

The Blue Triteleie comes in western North America in California and southern Oregon in open forests and grasslands on heavy soils at altitudes of 1200 meters before.

Use

The Blue Triteleie is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens, flower beds and steppe as a cut flower. It is in culture at least since 1833. There are some varieties with light blue, blue and purple flowers. The hybrids Triteleia × tubergenii LWLenz from Triteleia laxa and Long-stemmed Triteleie ( Triteleia peduncularis ) has lavender flowers.
