Tromøy

Tromøy is the largest island of Sørlandet. Previously, she was an independent municipality in Aust- Agder Fylke; today it is part of Arendal municipality.

Location

In the southwest of the island Hove is located. Along the coast of Skagerrak is a moraine follows, which is under protection. In the north of the island is separated by the 12 km long strait Tromøysund from the mainland and towards the island Hisøy the west lies the 2 km long strait Galtesund.

The bridge Tromøybrua since 1961 is a connection to the mainland. Before the construction of the bridge took a car ferry from Barbu (district in Arendal ) to Skilsøy on Tromøy. Today there is a passenger ferry.

Tromøy community

From 1837 Tromøy was with Barbu and Stokken formannskapsdistrikt part of Austre Moland. As of May 1, 1878 Tromøy Barbu formed two separate municipalities. At this time Tromøy counted 2,320 residents. From 1878 to 1992 Tromøy received the status of an independent commune, and included several small islands, for example Merdø and Tromlingene. By 1 January 1992 Tromøy, Hisøy, Moland and Øyestad with Arendal became a new municipality of Arendal municipality merged. Meanwhile, the population had grown to 4,711 Tromøys inhabitants.

History

The name comes from Tromøy Thruma, meaning threshold, an "edge" rising from the sea.

The name is derived from the Norwegian word Hove hov, which denotes an ancient pagan worship. Radius Hove settlements were a total of 60 barrows found which are dated to 1800 BC to 1000 AD. This indicates that there has been a settlement from the Bronze Age to Tromøy. The oldest documented courtyards are Gjervold and Sandum from the year 1320 and Hove, Bjelland and Lien from the year 1593rd

Recreational

Tromøy offers many recreational activities, such as sports clubs, a glee club, a nightclub, or the possibility for paintball.

Trauma is the largest sports club in the island, in which especially the football and handball section is of importance. Both have a lot of teams divided by age, including a seniors team. Trauma Håndball is the club with most age groups South Coast. Another notable association is the Tromøy Fritidsklubb, of which the activities of a nightclub on regular Softgun competitions to mini - Sing Ten Sing or Maxi -Sing. In the summer of 2007, the Hovefestival was organized for the first time. With 72,000 participants, it was the largest festival in Norway.

Churches

Tromøy was always a separate parish in the deanery Arendal. It includes two churches; the Tromøy kirke east of Hove, a stone church from the Middle Ages of 1150, and in the Færvik Færvik kirke of 1884. Moreover, there is still Kongshavn in the chapel Kongshavn kapell.

TBE risk area

Tromøy is one of the few places in Norway where the TBE virus can be transmitted through the Commons wooden support. It can cause a form of brain and meningitis. However, only 0.1-1 % of the ticks in the areas at risk virus carriers.
