Trophimus of Arles

The Holy Trophimus was the first bishop of the city of Arles (France), as these middle of the 3rd century, became the seat of a bishopric.

Life

According to Gregory of Tours, Trophimus around the year 250 with six other companions was ordained a bishop. With his companions ( Gatianus of Tours, Paul of Narbonne, Saturninus of Toulouse, Denis of Paris and Martial of Limoges ), he was sent on mission to Gaul. He is attested clearly in a letter from the year 417

Legends and worship

According to one legend, which originated around the year 450, Trophimus was a disciple of the Apostle Peter. With this legend, the bishops of Arles wanted to raise the important position of their diocese. According to other legends, he was a disciple of the apostle Paul.

Trophimus is also revered as a saint. In Arles, the Cathedral of Saint Trophimus is named after him.

His feast day is December 29.
