The Tumut River at Tumut

The Tumut River is a river in the Australian state of New South Wales. It rises on the northern slopes of Mount Jagungal in the Snowy Mountains in southeastern New South Wales.

River

The river flows about 145 km, before it flows into the Murrumbidgee River at Darbalara near the town of Gundagai. The river is part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system. This river also receives the waters of the Tooma River and Lake Eucumbene. Between the towns of Tumut Cabramurra and there are five dams and four hydroelectric power plants, including the three Tumut - hydropower plants, the Blowering Dam and the Talbingo Dam.

The Tumut River is water sports like canoeing and trout fishing instead.

Ecology

The Tumut River was examined to determine the environmental impact of the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system. It was found that there is a large increase in bank erosion, with about two acres of land were lost per kilometer river. The water supply along the river and the former water quality have suffered. Due to the low water temperatures in Blowing Dam the natural fish population has been eliminated and as a result of the strong change in the water level was lost native flora and fauna.
