Tunisian Constituent Assembly election, 1956

Elections to the Constituent Assembly were held in Tunisia on March 25, 1956, five days after independence.

The result was a victory for the National Union, an alliance of Neo - Destour party, the General Tunisian trade union federation, the National Union of Tunisian farmers and the Tunisian Union of artisans and traders, who won all 98 seats, while the opposition from Communists and independents together only 1.3% of the vote. After the election, Habib Bourguiba was appointed Prime Minister of the dominated by the Neo - Destur government. The turnout was 83.6 %.
