Tureni

Tureni (deprecated Tur; Hungarian Tordatúr or Túr ) is a municipality in the district of Cluj in Transylvania, Romania.

Location

Tureni lies in the west of Transylvania on the northeastern edge of the Apuseni Mountains. The nearest large towns are Turda ( about 10 km south-east ) and Cluj- Napoca (about 20 km north-west ).

History

Tureni was first documented in 1276. The place name is derived from the Slavic Tur ( = bison or aurochs ).

Population

The 1027 inhabitants ( as of 2002) describe each about half as Romanians and Hungarians. The population has since the peak in 1941 (then 1566) declined significantly. About 1,500 more people live in the four eingemeindeten villages.

Traffic

The place is located directly on European Routes 60 and 81 The nearest train station is located about 10 km east of the village on the railway line Cluj- Napoca Razboieni.

Attractions

South of Tureni is the approximately 2 km long gorge Cheile Turului, which is formed from the stream Pârâul Racilor.
