Turin–Milan high-speed railway

The high-speed line Turin -Milan connects the industrial cities of Milan and Turin and is part of the Italian high-speed network and the TEN- axis No. 6

The 86.4 km long section between Turin and Novara was opened in Turin in February 2006 before the Olympic Winter Games. The 38.3 km long section between Novara and Milan, was opened on 5 December 2009.

Route

The quick route starts at the Torino Stura railway station and ends just outside Milan at Milano Certosa Train Station. The route runs largely parallel to the A4 motorway. For existing line, there are two connections, Vercelli and Novara West West. A branch Novara East is prepared, but not yet finished building. In connection with the construction of the high-speed line of Torino Porta Susa railway station is being rebuilt. In future it is planned in the west to extend the line as part of a high-speed line Turin -Lyon.

The route includes 21 major bridges of up to 3800 meters in length and 25 tunnels of up to 1500 meters in length.

History

On October 6, 2005, ETR reached 500 at a speed of 350.8 km / h On 10 February 2006 the company was incorporated. First two pairs of trains per day Euro Star were offered.

On 10 February 2006 was - for the Olympic Winter Games of Torino Stura section between ( 0.3 kilometer ) and Novara ( Novara Ovest Inter Connessione, kilometer 84.3 ) in operation. The remaining 38 miles to Milano Certosa should follow in July 2009.

With the opening of the section between Turin and Novara, the travel time between Milan and Turin shortened to 87 minutes. Since the completion of the remaining portion between Novara and Milan, the travel time is still 52 minutes.

As the train control system ETCS Level 2 at the beginning was not yet ready for use, only one train per direction could use the new section each. With the completion of the entire route will, in conjunction with the old route, increase the maximum number of trains of today 244 484 per day.

On May 25, 2006, an ETR -500 set in Turin - Novara section on with 352.026 km / h new speed record for rail vehicles in Italy.
