Ukrainian presidential election, 2014

The early presidential election in Ukraine in 2014 will be held on 25 May 2014. The election campaign for the presidency in Ukraine began after the announcement of the election date on 25 February 2014. Candidates must have registered until April 4, 2014.

Prehistory

Due to the ongoing anti-government protests in Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych agreed after long negotiations with the opposition leaders Vitali Klitschko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleh Tjahnybok on February 21, 2014, inter alia, by the adoption of a new constitution and no later than December 2014 conduct new elections. However, the agreement was met with the majority of the protesters on Independence Square, demanding an immediate resignation of the president, rejected. After they left the fraction of Yanukovych's Party of Regions during the February 22 numerous other members of parliament, the Verkhovna Rada the dismissal Yanukovych and May 25 decided as election date.

The former governor of the Kharkiv Oblast, Mykhailo Dobkin, who belongs to the Party of Regions, announced on 24 February 2014 his candidacy for president. As a reason for his candidacy he called laws that threatened all those who are " fascism and nationalism do not want to connect " and calls for arbitrary persecution of people opinions that differed from the opinions of the new authorities. Dobkin was arrested on March 10. Accused him is secessionism. On March 11, Dobkin was sentenced to house arrest in his Kiev apartment. However, since an assurance by the entrepreneur Rinat Akhmetov that Dobkin will appear in court, he may his apartment from 9 clock in the morning and 2 clock at night leave. On March 28, Dobkin was nominated as presidential candidate of the Party of Regions. Dobkin is in favor of that the governors of the regions democratically elected and are not to be determined by the President and also advocates the transformation of Ukraine into a federal one.

Candidates

The opposition politician Vitali Klitschko and Yulia Tymoshenko gave each announced its intention to run for the office of head of state. Dmytro Jarosch, chairman of the group Prawyj sector, announced on March 7, 2014 also his candidacy. On March 27, 2014 Yulia Tymoshenko announced her presidential candidacy. Another candidate is Petro Poroshenko. Following the announcement of candidacy Poroschenkos Klitschko waived on March 29, 2014, to his own and announced to support Poroshenko.

As the first candidate to Renat Kuzmin who registered on March 17, 2014 as a candidate. On March 25, Wadym Rabynowytsch and Mykhailo Dobkin submitted the documents for their candidacy.
