Umang Gupta

Umang Gupta (* in Patiala, Punjab ) is an Indian- American entrepreneurs.

In 1971, he became the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and the following year his MBA from Kent State University in Ohio. In 1973, he began his career at IBM, first as a salesman, where he rose to marketing management. In this time he met a British woman know, Ruth. Because of them he did not go back to India.

Around 1980 he moved to a start-up in Silicon Valley. When in 1981 he founded his own software company, he could not find a venture capitalist. After a few months he was then started at a different start -up company, Relational Software as 17 employees. He wrote the first business plan. It was the Oracle Corporation later.

In 1984 he founded Gupta Technologies, which went public in 1993. Here he was Chairman and CEO until 1996 he left the company. He then became an investor and advisor to several start-up companies. When the manufacturer of call center systems Mosaix 1997-99 he served on the Board of Trustees, until its sale to Lucent.

Today he runs the company Keynote Systems in San Mateo, California.
