Umbilicus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae ( Crassulaceae ). It is referred to in German as Venus Abel or navel herb. The botanical name of the genus derives from the Latin word for " navel " and refers to the navel -like depression of the plate leaves.

Description

The species of the genus Umbilicus are small, hairless, perennial, more or less deciduous, succulent herbaceous plants. Up to umbilicus oppositifolius they almost always have a tuberous rhizome or rootstock. The weichfleischigen leaves are stalked, nearly circular, usually (except for Umbilicus oppositifolius ) more or less shield-shaped and possess in the middle of a depression. The leaf margin sinuate to toothed. The leaves on the shoots are generally getting smaller towards the top and are linear - lanceolate.

The most Vielblütige, long and sometimes branched inflorescence is a terminal raceme or panicle. The sometimes upright, but usually horizontal or pendulous flowers are fünfzählig and obdiplostemon. Your tubular or bell-shaped crown has erect or spreading at the top corner, which are always fused with the base. The petals are white, green or yellow colored and sometimes crowded purple.

The fruit is a slender follicle.

The genus Umbilicus is in Western and Central Europe, Macaronesia, the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, spreading from West Asia to the western Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula and in North, Central and East Africa. The species of section Chiastophyllum differ from those of the Section umbilicus by their fibrous roots as well as the opposite, not shield-shaped leaves.
