United Nations Operation in Burundi

The Opération des Nations Unies au Burundi, short ONUB (French, the United Nations Mission in Burundi ) was a peace mission of the United Nations Operation in Burundi. It was launched on 21 May 2004 by resolution 1545 of the UN Security Council into being, to implement the provisions of the Arusha Abkommenes and later Pretoria protocols, which had been concluded between the warring parties. The mandate of ONUB expired on 31 December 2006. The operation was superseded on 1 January 2007 by the Bureau of Intégré Nations Unies au Burundi ( BINUB ). In order for the Security Council Resolution 1719 was implemented.

ONUB had an authorized amount of 5,650 soldiers, including 125 officers (as of January 31, 2006: 5153 ) and 200 military observers (170 ) and 120 civilian police officers ( 87) of 434 civilian employees (318 ), 170 UN Volunteers (135 ) and 446 local employees were supported. ONUB was authorized to use all necessary means to secure the ceasefire to disarm the fighters in the civil war parties to demobilize and reintegrate as well as to observe the illegal arms trade at the borders. Other tasks of ONUB involved assistance to humanitarian aid, securing the return of refugees and the repatriation of displaced persons, and ensure free, transparent and peaceful elections.

ONUB was last commanded by Major General Derrick Mbuyiselo Mgwebi from the Republic of South Africa.
