United Nations Transition Assistance Group

The United Nations support unit for the transitional period, short UNTAG ( United Nations Transition Assistance of English Group) based on UN Resolution 632 of 16 February 1989, and was used from April 1989 to March 1990 in Namibia.

The aim of the UN mandate was the implementation of the plan for the independence of Namibia, in particular to ensure free and fair elections in the country.

UNTAG was conducted from headquarters in Windhoek from Martti Ahtisaari of Finland, in his capacity as Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of Mission. Responsible for the leadership of the armed forces were from September 1978 to January 1980, the Austrian Major General Hannes Philipp and from January 1980 to March 1990, the Indian Dewan Prem Chand Lieutenant General, who was from March 1989 responsible for the entire forces. During the mission, 19 members killed, eleven members of the military, four civilian police officers, three international and local civilian staff came.
