The University of Orléans (French: Université d' Orléans ) is a state university in the French city of Orléans in central France. Along with Paris, Toulouse, Avignon and Montpellier, it is one of the oldest universities of France and one of the oldest universities in Europe, its foundation dates back to the year 1230.

History

The medieval university

Already in 1235 the city of Orléans by Pope Gregory IX. the right conferred Roman Law to teach; 1306 saw the establishment of the University of Orléans by papal bull by Pope Clement V. In the years after the founding of St. Yves studied and Clement V in Orléans law and contributed to the reputation of the University at. It benefited mainly from the fact that in Paris the teaching of Roman law was prohibited since 1273. Several professors and many students came therefore to Orléans. The university town has been a center of law, particularly civil law. The " Latin Quarter " of Orléans was born in the historic city south of the Cathedral. The professors taught mostly in their own homes. Dating from the 15th century building " Salle des Theses " with pointed arches served the University as a library and was at the same examination hall. Jean Calvin was a student here, and also taught for a short time in Orléans. The decline of the university intensified in 1679, has again been taught as Roman Law in Paris. In 1793, the university was closed in the wake of the French Revolution.

Current Situation

Today's university was only reopened in 1960 on the campus in the satellite town of Quartier de la Source. However, their reputation they retained and therefore applies to the present day, especially in the field of law, as one of the most important universities of France. The Faculty of Law, which has its focus in European and international law, is in the national rankings regularly among the top five schools in the country. The university is organized today in four faculties (French facultés ).
