The University of Stavanger (Norwegian: Universitetet i Stavanger ) is a state university in Stavanger and has approximately 8,500 students and 1,200 employees. Rector of the University is Aslaug Mikkelsen (2007-2011).

History

The predecessor of the University, the University of Stavanger, was founded on 1 August 1994 with the merger of six state and a private college. In 2000, the strategy was designed to attain university status within four years. For necessary were four doctoral degree programs. At this point you could already acquire a doctorate in petroleum engineering and offshore engineering. In June 2003, the college also received the right to award the doctorate in the fields of special education and Risk Management / Social Security. In the same month the application was sent to the university status. This was approved by the NOKUT ( ​​Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education ) in August 2004. On January 1, 2005, she finally received the desired university status and the University of Stavanger was officially opened by King Harald V on 17 January 2005.
