The University of Zambia (English: University of Zambia, UNZA short ) was founded in 1965 in Lusaka and took on 17 March 1966 the Ridgeway campus to operate on. It is the largest University of Zambia.

Location

The main campus is the Great East Road Campus, located at the Great East Road, and six kilometers from the city center. The second region is referred to as Ridgeway campus. It lies on the south-east of Lusaka nationalist Road opposite the University Teaching Hospital ( UTH ) ( German about: University teaching hospital ) and serves the School of Medicine ( German as: Medical school).

History

The legal basis for its creation is the law No. 66 of 1965 ( Act of Parliament no. 66 of 1965). Their creation took place almost precipitously since Zambia at the time of its independence in population 3.5 million just had 100 graduates. No other British colony was dismissed with so little locals and college graduation to independence. The University of Zambia founded their claim and their focus initially on the Rhodes - Livingstone Institute of Social Research (see Manchester School of Anthropology ).

In the first years of its existence worked for three academic departments ( schools ): education, humanities and social sciences and natural sciences. In the first academic year, 312 students were enrolled. With the consolidation of the foundation structures, the offer of the University extended to other faculties: Law ( 1967), Technology (1969 ), medicine (1970), Agricultural Sciences ( 1971), Mining (1973 ), Economic and Industrial Studies (1978, on the Ndola Campus ), environmental protection (1981, on the Ndola Campus ) and Veterinary Medicine ( 1983).

In 1975, a federal structure of the university was established. This resulted in the following three main locations in the cities of Lusaka, Ndola and Solwezi in the province of North - Western. The University of Zambia Act put it in 1979, the constitutional basis.

Academic offer

At the University to learn about 8,500 students. The campus is located on the Great East Road, about seven miles outside of downtown Lusaka. The medical campus is located at Ridgeway near the University Hospital.

The University of Lusaka offers educational programs in agriculture, engineering, natural sciences, education, law and social sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine and mining. The studies last for four years in engineering and medicine five and seven years.

The University of Zambia operates the School of Agricultural Sciences, the work in autonomy.
