Urlați

Urlaţi is a town in Prahova County in the Great Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Urlaţi is located in the foothills of the southern part of the Eastern Carpathians. The county seat Ploieşti is situated about 20 km south-west.

History

Archaeological finds prove the settlement of the area since the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. Urlaţi was first documented in 1515. The place belonged successively various Wallachian noble families and lived from agriculture, and viticulture. 1711 held here the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu from a military camp. End of the 19th century Urlaţi was home to some of Romanian Army units. Today, in addition to agriculture, the textile, construction and food industries are the major industries.

Population

1860 lived in Urlaţi 1,645 people. 1992 was registered with 12,309 the highest population. As of the 2002 census, there were 11,778 inhabitants in Urlaţi, including 11,589 Romanians and 178 Roma. 7,643 people lived in the city proper, the other about 4,000 in the 16 local villages.

Traffic

Urlaţi itself has no rail connection; the route Bucharest - Galaţi leads a few kilometers south past the city ( station Cricov ). There are regular bus services to Ploieşti.
