Urus-Martan

Urus -Martan (Russian Урус - Мартан; Chechen ХӀалхӀа-Марта/Chalcha-Marta ) is a town with 49 070 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian republic of Chechnya in the Caucasus. It is the administrative center of Urus- Martan Rajons and is the second largest city in Chechnya.

General

Urus -Martan is located in the central part of Chechnya, 31 km southwest of the capital Grozny on the river Martan ( Terek river system ).

The status of a city, the place has since 1990, previously was Urus -Martan a large village ( aul ), which had existed at least in the 19th century.

The economy of the city and the Rajons is now mainly from agriculture and some food factories. Near the city runs the M29 highway that leads out of the Krasnodar region up to the Azerbaijani border.
