Shali, Chechen Republic

Shali (Russian Шали ) is a city and administrative center of the homonymous Rajons in the republic of Chechnya in Russia. It has 47 708 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and located 36 km south-east of the Republic capital Grozny, on the river Dschalka ( river system of the Terek ).

History

The place was known already in the 19th century as a Aul, so a larger village with a population of several thousand inhabitants. During this time, Shali was repeatedly fought between local rebels and the Imperial Russian Army.

Since 1990 Shali has the status of a city. In the First and Second Chechen War in the 1990s, it was, like many other places in the Republic, severely damaged.
