The USS California ( SSN -781 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy. It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the U.S. state of California.

History

SSN -781 was given in 2003 in order and placed in May 2009 at Newport News Shipbuilding in Kiel. The submarine was baptized 6 November 2010, was godmother Donna Willard, wife of Admiral Robert F. Willard. A week later, the dry dock was flooded and the California left so that the stack. In August 2011, the U.S. Navy took over the submarine eight months before the contractually agreed date. On October 29, 2011, the California in Norfolk was put into service. She was then stationed at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton.
