The USS Minnesota ( SSN -783 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy. It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the U.S. state of Minnesota.

Name

SSN -783 was named after the U.S. state of Minnesota. The last U- boat, which had the same name, was placed out of service in 1921. The submarine USS Minneapolis -Saint Paul, which bears a similar name was made in 2008 out of service. There was also a battleship (USS Minnesota ( BB -22) ), a frigate (USS Minnesota ( 1855) ), as well as a cargo ship (SS Minnesotan ) with this name.

History

SSN -783 was commissioned in 2004 and placed in May 2011 at Newport News Shipbuilding in Kiel. The launch took place in late 2012. On September 7, 2013, Minnesota was put into service (11 months ahead of schedule ).
