The USS New York (LPD -21 ) is an Amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio - class of the United States Navy.

History

Shortly after the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 in the United States, the Governor George Pataki wrote a letter to the then Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England, in which he asked, an over-water warship that will be used in the war on terror, according to the New York U.S. state to be named. This request was, although at this time only missile submarines were named after states, met on 28 August 2002.

The contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. The Shipyard Avondale Shipyard used in the construction of the ship in the stem 6.8 tons of steel ( 7 ½ short tons ), which originates from the rubble of the World Trade Center.

On 19 December 2007, the New York has gone from the stack and was baptized on 1 March 2008. Godmother was Mrs. Dotty England, wife of Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England. The Navy accepted on August 21, the New York, the ship was found in New York City on November 7, 2009 in service. Home port was initially the Naval Station Norfolk and from December 2013, the Naval Station Jacksonville.
