Útoyggjar

Útoyggjar [ ʉut ˌ ɔʤ ː ar] ( Faroese " outer islands" ) are the small islands in the periphery of the Faroe Islands.

These include the eight inhabited islands Fugloy, Svinoy, Kalsoy, Mykines, Hestur, Koltur, Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun. Lítla Dímun is inhabited only by sheep and is therefore not included.

Since the merging of Nólsoy in the municipality Tórshavn on 1 January 2005, this island is no longer outside the island.

Allen outer islands have in common that they are threatened by depopulation and only by boat ( Strandfaraskip Landsins ) or helicopter (Atlantic Airways ) can be achieved.

In December 2001, the Útoyggjafelagið was founded to represent the interests of the small outer islands of the Faroes. There are annual meetings, which have the character of a special festival for the islanders. Purpose of the association is the economic development of small islands and their cooperation.
