Vainu Bappu

MK Vainu BAPPU ( Manali Kallat Vainu BAPPU; born August 10, 1927 in Madras, † 19 August 1982) was an Indian astronomer.

Vainu BAPPU was the only child of Manali Kukuzhi and Sunanna BAPPU. His father was an astronomer at the Observatory Nizamiah in Hyderabad ( India), the early awakened an interest for his science with his son.

After Vainu BAPPU had acquired at the University of Madras his Master in Physics, he moved to Harvard University where she earned in 1952 and his doctorate (PhD). During a brief stay as a Carnegie Fellow at the Hale Observatories he discovered along with Olin C. Wilson Wilson - BAPPU effect. He then went to a year as a post-doc back to India.

Was BAPPU in 1960 Director of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory. In the early 1970s, a new observatory in Kavalur was established under his supervision.
