Valençay

Valençay is a commune with 2571 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Indre in the Centre region; it belongs to the district Châteauroux and Canton Valençay.

Location

The community on the border between Touraine and Berry covers 42.59 square kilometers and is located above the Nahon River and south of the National Road 76 between the hole and Vatan to 81-154 m above sea level.

History

1120 is first mentioned in the place.

In the castle Valençay, which belonged to Prince Talleyrand in 1805, Ferdinand VII of Spain lived in exile 1808-13 and joined here with Napoleon the contract of 11 December 1813 in which he received the throne of Spain again. 1829 Valençay was elevated to a duchy for Talleyrand.

During World War II Valençay suffered considerable damage in August 1944.

  • A specialty here is a pyramid-shaped from raw or pasteurized goat milk produced, with bark ash -covered soft cheese with exterior mold, with the apex of the pyramid is cut off above.
