Variant form (Unicode)

The Unicode block Variantenselektoren (English Variation Selectors, U FE00 to U FE0F ) contains 16 Variantenselektoren (control characters ) that can be used to use alternative variants of a particular character, for which are provided no separate code points. More 240 Variantenselektoren be found in the Unicode block Variantenselektoren, supplement. The Unicode block contains three other Mongolian Variantenselektoren for use in Mongolian.

Use

The correct use of the characters of this block is on the one hand from the Unicode Technical Standard # 37 (UTS # 37), specifically from the Ideographic Variation Database ( IVD), and in part of the Unicode Character Database (UCD).

Variantenselektoren be adjusted to change the basic character. Applications that support Variantenselektoren, the base character individually standing pose which differs depending on the sequence of base character and Variantenselektor. Example: If the character ≨ (U 2268, LESS -THAN BUT NOT EQUAL TO) alone, the line through the equals sign is oblique; but immediately follows the Variantenselektor 1 (U FE00 ), the underscore is displayed vertically: ≨ ︀ (U 2268 U FE00 ). In addition to the application itself, the font must support the representation of the different variants; if not, the Variantenselektoren remain without visible effect. The same is true for those sequences that are not standardized, and are therefore not included in either IVD still in UCD.

In Unicode 6.3 sequences are defined for 27724 CJK characters (but with Variantenselektoren from the Unicode block Variantenselektoren, supplement ), 23 mathematical symbols (15 Mathematical from the Unicode block operators, 8 Additional from the Unicode block Mathematical operators, all with U FE00 ), 6 Phagspa letters (all with U FE00 ), 64 Mongolian letters ( with the three Mongolian Variantenselektoren ) and 214 Emojis (U FE0E for text style, U FE0F for Emoji style). Most Variantenselektoren this block are currently so unused.

Table

All characters have the general category and the Bidirectional class " marking without extra width". Instead of the advertised name and the abbreviation ( VS -1, etc. ) is in use.
