Veľký Meder

Velky Meder ( 1948-1990 Slovak " Čalovo "; Hungarian Nagymegyer ) is a city in southern Slovakia.

The city was mentioned in 1268 for the first time in writing as Villa Meger, was from 1948 to 1990 Čalovo ( after the original Slovak name of part / river / harbor of Rye Island from the 12th/13th. Century) and is divided in Velky Meder and IZOP (Hungarian Izsap ).

Until 1918, Velky Meder belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award, the city from 1938 to 1945 came briefly back to Hungary.

The city is strongly influenced by the Hungarian-born population, which makes up about 85%.

  • Ordained Roman Catholic Church from 1460, 1900 rebuilt in neoclassical style and the St. Nicholas
  • Reformed Church in 1784 in baroque style
  • Consecrated chapel from 1910, the Virgin Mary
