Vernashen

Verna 's (Armenian Վերնաշեն ), other transcription Vernashen, old name Srkoghovk until 1946 Azerbaijani Başkənd ( Baschkend ) is a village and a rural municipality ( hamaynkner ) with about 1300 inhabitants in the province südarmenischen Wajoz Dzor north of the provincial capital Jeghegnadsor. The Gladzor museum dedicated to the history and meaning of the eponymous medieval university, probably located at the nearby former monastery Tanahat.

Verna 's is located at an altitude of 1479 meters on the slopes of a hill five kilometers north of Jeghegnadsor. A road leads from the center of the provincial capital, initially through the suburb Gladzor and steadily uphill through making love. On the northern outskirts of the village, the one-lane asphalt road bends to the southeast from, reached after five kilometers, the former monastery Tanahat and ends three kilometers away near a place of pilgrimage for Armenian Christians, the church of the former monastery Arkaz ( Arkazi Surb Khach ).

On Gladzor Museum of the nine -kilometer-long track and the shorter walk starts at the northern mountains in the monastery church Spitakavor and further up to the fortress Prosch Aberd ( Boloraberd ) from the 13th century.

Townscape

According to official statistics from 2008 Verna 's had 1312 inhabitants. In 2012, the population was at the same level in 1318. Verna 's is one of 41 rural communities in the province. The Armenian inhabitants arrived around 1829 from the north-western Iranian region Salama.

The urban houses and farms of Verna 's are surrounded by gardens with dense trees. Due to the loose construction Gladzor and nibble on along the road are largely grown together. Gladzor Museum

The place is known for the Gladzor Museum, which was established in the former Surb Hakob church from the 17th century. The museum building is a three-aisled basilica from rough-hewn tufa blocks, some of which are of an older building. The three rows of columns divided by massive ships are covered by a broad gable roof, as is typical for südarmenische church building this time. The University of Gladzor was founded in 1282 when the South of present-day Armenia was largely independent among the princes of Orbelian and Proschian family. One of the founders was the architect, sculptor and book illustrator Momik. Until its closure in 1338 went from her far-reaching impetus to the Armenian religious and philosophical thought of. She took a leading role in the self-affirmation of the Armenian Apostolic Church against the Roman Catholic missionaries who wanted to Armenia subordinate to the Pope.

From all Armenian settlements including Cilicia arrived students to Gladzor. Some of the 350 graduates of the University are specifically preserved. The seven- to eight -year training program included the classic seven compartments, the first three subjects ( Latin Trivium ) logic, grammar and rhetoric were taught, followed by the four subjects ( Quadrivium ) arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Another focus formed miniature painting, calligraphy and sculpture. Unrest and anarchy as a result of the succession squabbles among the Mongolian Ilchanen led to the closure of the university. The philosopher Hovhannes Vorotnetsi ( 1315-1388/98 ) led after 1338 briefly the teaching in the monastery Vorotnavank in today's province of Syunik further before he founded the University of Tatev monastery, which existed until 1434.

The museum has copies of old manuscripts, maps and photos of different monasteries and educational institutions of the country. The original manuscripts are in the Matenadaran in Yerevan. The building was 1984, after the 700 -year anniversary of the University Gladzor, which took place in 1982 at the ruins of the monastery Tanahat, restored and furnished as a museum. It is open daily except Mondays from 10.00 bis 16.00 clock.
