Vernon Nicholls

Vernon Sampson Nicholls ( born September 3, 1917 in Truro, † February 2nd 1996 in Stratford- upon- Avon ) was a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1974 to 1983 Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England.

Nicholls came from Cornwall. He attended Truro School and studied at Durham University. To prepare for the priesthood, he studied theology at Clifton Theological College in Bristol. In 1941 he was ordained a deacon; still followed the priesthood that same year. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) in the district Bedminster Down in Bristol and in Liskeard with responsibility for the church in St Heyne in Cornwall. From 1944 to 1946 he was known as " Chaplain to the Forces" ( army chaplain ) operates. From 1946 to 1956 he was pastor (Vicar ) of Meopham, in the county of Kent. He was a member of Meopham Parish Council and Strood District Council at this time. He played cricket and took part in performances of Meopham player with. In later years, he returned several times back to Meopham. In 1982, he held there from church services. From 1953 to 1956 he was dean of the same country ( Rural Dean ) of Cobham. On June 11, 1974, he was consecrated in York Minster bishop. He was from 1974 to 1983 Sodor and Man in the Church of England. His solemn enthronement took place in Douglas on George 's Church. In 1983, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Sodor and Man was Arthur Atwell. In his retirement he worked from 1983 to 1996 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Coventry ( Honorary Assistant Bishop of Coventry).

Among the highlights of his tenure as Bishop of Sodor and Man the collection of the Parish Church of Kirk German belonged in Peel to the Cathedral, Peel Cathedral. The survey to the cathedral in 1980 by an Act of Tynwald. From 1980, Nicholls was also Dean of the newly formed Peel Cathedral. Nicholls married 1943, his wife Phyllis Potter. From the marriage were two children, a son and a daughter.
