Vétraz-Monthoux

Vétraz -Monthoux is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Vétraz -Monthoux is located at 500 m above sea level. M., about two kilometers south of Annemasse and nine kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The double municipality extends on a ridge in the lower Arve Valley, between the heights of Salève and Les Voirons, on the outskirts of Annemasse, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​7.11 km ² municipal area includes a section at the bottom Arve Valley. The southern boundary runs along the Menoge that has sunk here by erosion around a 60 m deep valley with 300 m broad, flat valley floor in the gravel plain. History

The territory of Vétraz -Monthoux been inhabited since the Neolithic period and during the Roman period. Monthoux 1142 first mentioned. From the Middle Ages the name forms Montheolum ( 1287 ) and Montou ( 1355 ) have survived. The place name comes from the Latin word montosus ( mountainous, hilly ) back. Vétraz appears in the 13th century for the first time in the documents.

Monthoux was the site of a castle which was under the rule of Faucigny. Over time Monthoux underwent various changes of ownership, including in 1536 the Bernese rule. In Savoyerkrieg the castle was plundered in 1590 by the people of Geneva. After Monthoux was in possession of Savoy and shared his fate. In 1818, merged and Vétraz Monthoux to a double community.

Attractions

The village church at Vétraz was built in Sardinian style. At the site of the former keep of the castle of Monthoux since the 19th century is a chapel.

Population
