Vichada Department

The Departamento de Vichada is an administrative region in eastern Colombia. The then largely covered by tropical forest area was established in 1913 as a so-called " Commissioner " ( Comisaría ) and raised to the rank of a department in 1991. It is bordered to the north and east by Venezuela, to the south by the departments Guainía and Guaviare, on the west by Meta and Casanare and Arauca northwest lie.

Named after the former Colombian Minister Pedro María Carreño carries the main town was founded in 1913 ( since 1954 commune ( municipality ) since 1991, the official capital ) of Vichada, which consists essentially of an airfield with surrounding office buildings and settlements, the name Puerto Carreño. According to official estimates for 2005, the town has about 10,000 inhabitants.

Agriculture and cattle farming are the economic mainstays of the region. There are grown on acid soils inferior corn, yuca, plantains, and cocoa. Furthermore, play hunting, fishing and mining iron and uranium an important role.

The majority form of various aboriginal tribes. Worth seeing is the National Park Tuparro.
