Victor Ambartsumian

Viktor Hambarzumjan (Armenian Վիկտոր Համբարձումյան, in scientific transliteration Viktor Hambarjowmyan; * 5 Septemberjul / September 18 1908greg in Tbilisi, Georgia, .. † August 12, 1996 in Byurakan in Yerevan, Armenia) was an Armenian astrophysicist and astronomer. He is outside of Armenia mainly as Viktor Amasaspowitsch Ambarzumjan or Viktor Ambartsumian Amazaspovich known (Russian Виктор Амазаспович Амбарцумян ) The usual in the USSR Russification.

Career

Viktor Hambarzumjan graduated from the Leningrad State University from, worked from 1928 to 1931 with Aristarchus Belopolski at Pulkovo Observatory from 1934 to 1943 and was a professor in Leningrad. In 1946 he founded the Astrophysical Observatory of Byurakan. He discovered in 1947, the stellar associations and provided substantial work on stellar structure to Nova outbursts and unstable galactic nuclei. He became a member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and was its president from 1947 to 1993.

He wrote the first book in Russia on theoretical astrophysics and represented the first of the opinion that astronomically T Tauri stars are very young. From 1961 to 1964 he was President of the International Astronomical Union.

In the list of " most important people of the 20th century," Time Magazine Hambarzumjan was elected in 2000 in the category " most important scientists and thinkers " at No. 3 among the top ten personalities.

Viktor Hambarzumjan had four children. His son Ruben Hambarzumjan is a mathematician, specializing in stochastic geometry, and a member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, his son Rafael Hambarzumjan is laser physicist.
