Viehkogel

Viehkogel from east

The Viehkogel is a mountain in stony sea in the Berchtesgaden Alps on the border between Bavaria and Austria. It is 2,158 meters high and is located in the west -central part of the plateau of the stone sea. The special attraction of cattle Kogels arises from the fact that it is an island mountain, which offers a clear view in all directions. Due to its low height the view is limited, however, on the Stony sea itself; other mountains such as the Hohe Tauern mountains are not visible. Furthermore, higher mountains cover the immediate view of sunrise ( hidden by Funtenseetauern ) and sunset (hidden from the summit ridge between Breithorn and Schindlköpfen ), but the scenic beauty of cattle Kogels not diminish.

Will climb the Viehkogel mostly from Kärlingerhaus on Funtensee, from where a path leads to about 1.5 to 2 hours walking to the summit. Despite marks and consistently good visibility it is a challenging hiking trail, because - especially at the summit slope - very steep stretches occur with slipping. Experienced climbers can descend directly to Funtensee from the summit of cattle mountain. This descent is not as extreme as it looks from above, and leads - the steepest walls left evasive - by grassy slopes and mountain terrain.
