Vimeiro is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) Lourinhã. 1466 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Vimeiro was first mentioned in a document of the 12th century. The late 15th or early 16th century, it became a separate municipality.

1808 Here the Battle of Vimeiro occurred. The later General Wellington had initially quartered in Vimeiro. On August 21, 1808 under his command, Portuguese -British defense forces then met here on the French invasion army under General Junot. The French documents and broke with the signing of the Convention of Cintra their occupation from Portugal.

Attractions

For the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Vimeiro one built in the style of the early 19th century monument was inaugurated in 1908. A visitor center is set up at the site of the battle. In addition, the house in which resided the British commander in chief is under monument protection.

Other monuments in the church are two religious buildings, including the three-nave parish church Igreja do Paroquial Vimeiro from the late 15th century. That after his patron also Igreja de São Miguel (English: Church of St. Michael ) called baroque church shows inside among other things Azulejos and gilded altarpieces and polished wood.
