Vimperk

Vimperk ( German Winterberg) is a city in the Czech Republic. She is 21 kilometers from the German border and is part of the Okres Prachatice in the South Bohemian Region.

Geography

Vimperk located in the eastern Bohemian Forest, at the foot of Boubín in the Valley of Volyňka.

History

Vimperk was a center of the Bohemian glass industry. In the former district Adolf ( Adolfov ) there was the Adolfshütte, one operated by the company Meyr 's Neffe Glashütte.

In the 15th century, the itinerant printer January Alacraw set up his printing press in Vimperk. He printed the first Czech calendar for the year 1485. 1870, Johann Steinbrener there printers and in 1874 his own publishing company J. Steinbrener, which still exists today. Widely used were his prayer books, some of which were tied with luxurious materials such as leather, tortoise-shell, mother of pearl, ivory and snakeskin. From 1874 people, soldiers, teaching and entertainment calendar there were issued.

The city was burning in the 19th century more than once.

Until the expulsion of the German population in 1946, the city was right on the Czech-German language border. Today is located in the administration of the National Park Šumava (Bohemian Forest). In the twin city Freyung there is a local history museum of the city.

Attractions

  • Castle Vimperk, which was built by Prince Johann Adolf of Schwarzenberg from the former castle of 1260, now the City Museum with exhibits of local glass production ( since 1359 ), wood processing and the art of printing (since 1484 ). Above it are the ruins Haselburg.
  • The parish church of the Visitation is at the beginning of the town square. The edification of the church year is given as 1365, but it is not excluded that the building is much older. The church has an asymmetric double ship with a church tower in the southwest corner and an attached in 1500 St. Anne's Chapel. Further modifications were carried out in 1600 and in the 18th and 19th centuries. The nave is vaulted by a network of cross-vault. On the north side is a fragmentary wall paintings from the 15th century can be seen, which represents the 10,000 martyrs. The high altar is adorned with a beautiful Madonna of 1410. In the high altar and the tomb itself glazed relics of St. Innocent are from 1768.
  • In the environment, the jungle area around the mountain Boubín ( Kubany ) is a nature trail.
