Vincenzo Giustiniani

Vincenzo Giustiniani the Younger ( * September 13, 1564 in Chios, † December 27, 1637 in Rome), named Marchese Giustiniani, nephew of the same name Cardinal Vincenzo Giustiniani, was a Roman nobleman and art collector.

In 1566, the Genoese possession of Chios went over to the Ottoman Empire, he came with his family to Rome, where he grew up. 1606 its presence is attested in Faenza, where he is said to have an image associated with Dosso Dossi in the cathedral there. In the same year he undertook a five -month journey through Germany to England and on the way over France. His travel companion Bernardo Bizoni also led a diary.

He is portrayed as a man with many interests: history and philosophy (especially Stoicism ) on astrology and medicine to divination. The catalog of his library in the Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome contains nearly 400 works. Special admiration he had for the painter Caravaggio. 1815 were 70 of his paintings to Berlin in 1830 and served for the construction of the Altes Museum ( See: Giustiniani collection ).

His commentating writings to his collection were published in 1981 by Anna Banti sui mestieri under the title Discorsi e sulle arti.
