Violet Alva

Violet Alva ( born April 24, 1908 in Ahmedabad, † November 20, 1969 ) was an Indian lawyer and politician of the Congress Party.

Biography

Violet Alva studied post-school law and became involved after graduation as a lawyer for the rights of political prisoners. Because of their participation in the activities organized by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi nonviolent action against the British colonial administration, she was eventually arrested himself and was located until 1944 in prison. Shortly after her release, she resumed her work as a lawyer again and in 1944 the first woman to be pleaded as a defense lawyer before the Supreme Court of the colonial administration.

After the sovereignty of India by the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, she finally began her political career and was initially from 1947 to 1952 Member of the City Council of Mumbai, before they voted in 1952 as a member of the upper house ( Rajya Sabha ) and belonged to the 20th of this July 1969 to. During this time, she was the first time from 1953 to 1954 Vice-President of the Upper House.
