The monastery Vitskøl ( Witheschøle, scola Vitae ) is a former Cistercian monastery in Denmark.
Location
The monastery is located in the Region Nordjylland ( North Jutland ) in the municipality Vesthimmerland in the village of Ranum south of the city Løgstør the Limfjord.
History
The monastery was ( the Great) founded in 1158 by King Valdemar I.; it was after the Reformation in 1536 until 1563rd It was a daughter house of Esrom Monastery of the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary, however, been settled by the monastery of Varnhem sold in Sweden monks. From Vitskøl from the later to the monastery Øm moved Sminge monastery was founded in 1165.
Buildings and plant
The large three-nave church with a transept was finally abandoned in 1668. Ruins of their investment are still visible. The west wing of the south of the church located examination is obtained, the east wing partly rebuilt.
