Vogorno

Vogorno is a municipality in the Valle Verzasca ( Verzasca Valley ) in the circle Verzasca. It belongs to the district of district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

Vogorno is located on the Lago di Vogorno, above the dam Selvatica. Part of the village was flooded during the impoundment of the lake in the summer of 1965; the houses were newly built on the slope above the lake, see list of flooded by reservoirs places in Switzerland.

To Vogorno include fractions Berzona, Sant'Antonio and San Bartolomeo, which lie at the sunlit slopes. In the church of San Bartolomeo, the oldest in the valley, you can admire frescoes in Byzantine style ( built circa 1400).

History

The place is busy as an independent municipality since 1235. Until 1822 Corippo also belonged to the community. The church of San Bartolomeo, the main church of the Verzasca valley, was built in 1235. From the 16th century put an emigration movement that led from 1850 onwards also to overseas. 1961-1965 the dam for the Lago di Vogorno was built, one of the highest in Switzerland.
