Recently have expired in 2005, with the transfer of FL- series to a new model, the smaller model from 7.5 to less than 12 tonnes gross weight. After it was since the late 1980s, no longer in the European Conventional Trucks Volvo Truck program, was awarded the Volvo NH 12/NH16 again in 2000, such a model, brought in this case manufactured in Brazil, on the market. It was based largely on the technically comparable cab-over models. The vehicle was indeed prestigious for the brand, as it recalled the appearance of American trucks, but was, for example, in Germany about 20 to 30 units sold in the year does not exceed. Because of a new regulatory framework for the front underrun protection, it was no longer available in Europe since the end of 2003. One would have to make major changes to the chassis. Because of the small numbers for sale within the EU, however, this was not worthwhile.

Volvo VN / VT / VHD

Since 2002, Volvo Trucks America produces the Langhauber truck series Volvo VN / VT / VHD. The Tractor Volvo VN here was the first model presented with 4x2 or 6x4 drive formula. The technique of the series is based on the European Volvo FM and Volvo FH, adapted to American standards and requirements. The weight of the trailer is 15.9 to 23.6 tons and a maximum trailer trucks can be used to 56.7 tonnes gross weight.

Volvo internal nomenclature

Volvo trucks carry for decades as standard alphanumeric designations, which were occasionally supplemented by verbal additives ( such as titanium, Tiptop, Globetrotter ). The letters in the type designations do it to draw conclusions about the design of the vehicle to:

  • L = truck ( mid-1960s eliminated by F or N )
  • N = normal handlebar ( Hauber )
  • F = Cabover
  • FL = front handlebars low arranged cab (low), lightweight class (now 12-18 t)
  • FE = Front handlebar with low arranged cab, heavy class (18-26 t)
  • FM = Heavy Cabover with medium high arranged cab ( medium)
  • FMX = How FM, but for very serious tasks offroad
  • FH = Heavy Cabover with highly arranged cab (high), Highway vehicle
  • NH = Hauber (never import now ) with highly arranged cabin
  • VN = North American version with hood, has nothing to do with NH.
  • VT = VN but with more hood, mostly vt880, space for the large 16- liter engine and a cab with 16 m³ volume.

In the American Volvo variants, the terms do not refer to engine performance, but on cab size (670/770/880 etc ).

Figures behind the model designations refer to the diesel engine since 1978 and give the approximate engine capacity in liters (see Scania). In the early days of that model were for a short time four -digit model numbers in use, with these the liter specification applies for the first two digits of the four locations. The last two digits indicate the technically permissible total weight in tons. Also in 1978 presented generation was optional for the first time a factory- deliverable cab with high roof available, then a new departure in European truck-building. For many years this high roof was called Globetrotter, which was communicated by a wide inscription on the front of the cab and much contributed to the positive image of the brand in the truck sector.

Previous models (selection)

Of particular importance for the brand were the heavy truck series in past decades. The current Cabover models were over the borders of Sweden and the neighboring Scandinavian countries since the 1960s also in other European markets sold, beginning with the 1964 Volvo Titan Tiptop presented. Titan, the name of the heavy hood wagon had been previously. The type Tiptop was a front handlebar with tilt cab, a then-new achievement. To a large truck model in 1965 the F88 with 260 hp. In 1970 came largely identical, the stronger version F89 should be recognized by the wider grille. Both internationally successful types were replaced in 1977 by the newly developed, visually similar and very edgy acting Volvo F10/F12/F16, the slightly revised to 1992 remained in the program and were then replaced by the Volvo FH. In the central region Volvo offered from 1971 together with DAF, Magirus -Deutz and Saviem the Volvo F4/F6/F7 as part of the four clubs. From 1984, the successor to the Volvo FL 7, 10, 12 and the Volvo FL of rounding up the offer down. 1998 replaced the derived from FH Volvo FM FL 7-12 series. By 2001, she was equipped with the cab of the FL 7-12, then from FH. Since 2010 is derived from this series, the Volvo FMX, a special building site traffic truck Both models are produced in a new generation since 2013. The Volvo FL received with the Volvo FLC a model with 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, while the FL offered a total weight of 10 tons. 2006, the second generation was released, now with total weights of 12-18 tonnes and based on the FL Volvo FE with total weights of 18-26 tonnes. As the FM and FMX appeared FL 2013 a new generation. The first FH -12 and FH -16 series appeared in 2002 in a new generation and has been thoroughly revised in 2006. Since 2013, the FH is in a new generation in the offer.
