Vrakúň

Vrakúň ( Warkony German, Hungarian Nyékvárkony ) is a city and municipality in Okres Dunajská Streda of Trnavský kraj in southwestern Slovakia, with 2571 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Great Rye Island, a river island of the Danube, which flows a few kilometers to the south, partially stored in the power plant Gabčíkovo. Thus it is part of the Slovak Danube lowland. Vrakúň is located seven kilometers from Dunajská Streda and 50 kilometers from the capital Bratislava.

The municipality is divided into the districts Vrakúň and Nekyje na Ostrove (1940 amalgamated, Hungarian Nyék ).

History

The place Vrakúň was first mentioned in 1262 as Warkun writing ( according to some sources it is already occupied in 1015 ). He was primarily an agricultural community, to the property of a family as Nyék, Méhes, Balogh and Amade.

The neighboring Nekyje is first mentioned in 1165, in 1245 as Neku. He originally belonged to the manor of Pressburg and was later owned by several noble families.

Both places in the county Pressburg belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in 1919, and came then to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. In 1940, after the First Vienna Award to Hungary belonging places to merger of the two places.
