Vulcan, BraÅŸov

Vulcan ( outdated Vâlcândorf; German Wolkendorf, Hungarian Szászvolkány or Volkány ) is a municipality in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.

Location

Cloud village is located about 10 kilometers west of Braşov (Kronstadt) at the county road (drum Judetean ) DJ 112A, a side street between Coldea ( inside square brackets ) and Cristian ( Neustadt ). The town is surrounded to the south of the to well over 2,500 meters high mountains of the Southern Carpathians.

History

First colonization and local foundation

Remains of a Roman castrum between Vulcan and Rasnov ( Rosenau ) suggest that the area was inhabited since ancient times to. Beginning of the 13th century called King Andrew II of Hungary Teutonic Knights into Burzenland.

Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

The Teutonic Knights had to Transylvania soon leave, but the German rural population remained as a part of the Transylvanian Saxons in the region around Kronstadt. Cloud village was first mentioned in 1377. By the invasion of the troops of Gabriel Báthory in 1611 the village was devastated. The church, originally built in the 13th century, was rebuilt in 1665.

Recent history and contemporary

Towards the end of the 19th century were about sixty percent of the population Transylvanian Saxons. Through emigration to America ( 1900) and by Germany ( since the Second World War, particularly in 1990), their share dropped significantly to today.

Economy and Social

Traditionally, many inhabitants were and are Vulcans engaged in agriculture. The nearby city of Braşov (about 284,000 inhabitants) provides work for commuters from the surrounding villages of the district, as well as Vulcan.

The today only on secondary roads accessible museum is close to the route of the planned Transylvania Motorway A3, which is to run from Oradea over the Carpathians to Bucharest. The completion of the construction phase Comarnic - Brasov in 2016.

In 2009 121 members of the Protestant community were still counted ( Transylvanian Saxons ).
