Výborná

Výborná ( German beer Brunn, Hungarian Sörkút - to 1907 Viborna ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with 1074 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Kežmarok, a part of the Prešov Region and is counted to the traditional landscape Zips.

Geography

The community is located at the northern end of the valley Podtatranská kotlina, specifically in the part Popradská kotlina between the Spis Magura north and west of the Belianske Tatras. The local " mountain" is Mount Partizánska hora (937 m nm). South of the town flows the river Biela, a tributary of Poprad. The center is located at an altitude of 706 m nm and is seven kilometers from Spisská Bela and 14 kilometers away from Kežmarok.

Immediate neighboring towns of Výborná are Lendak and Slovenská Ves.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1289 as Birburn writing and was founded by German settlers in the mid-13th century. Significant landlords were from the families Bierzeviczy, Wakrotsch, Lasky and Horváth Stanczits. 1828 are 69 houses and 496 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture, is recording.

Until 1918, belonged to the county located in the Zips place the Kingdom of Hungary and came after Czechoslovakia and Slovakia today. After the expulsion of the German population in 1945 Slovaks came from the Spis Magura and Lendak to populate the village.

The name is from a mineral spring, "excellent" whose water tasted ( Slovak adjective Výborný ) derive. The German beer name Brunn was transferred into Hungarian as Sörkút with the same meaning.
