He springs from the Raukumara Range, where it forms the border in parts of Bay of Plenty region. The river passes through the city and ends at Ruatoria Rangitukia in the Pacific. To the river lies the tribal area ( Raw ) of the Ngati Porou iwi.

The river was July-October 1865 the scene of fighting during the New Zealand wars.

The river has two source rivers, the Tapuaeroa River and the Mata River.
