Waino Hendrickson

Waino Edward Hendrickson ( born June 18, 1896 in Juneau, Alaska, † June 22, 1983 Juneau, Alaska ) was an American politician and Acting Governor of the Alaska Territory.

Career

Waino Edward Hendrickson was born on June 18, 1896 in Juneau, after his family had immigrated from Finland. He decided in 1953 to pursue a career in politics when he was elected mayor of Juneau, a post which he held until 1953. In addition, he was also a member of the 1948-1953 territorial House of Representatives.

Hendrickson was appointed in 1953 under Governor B. Frank Heintzleman to the Secretary of State of the territory. He held until Alaska was incorporated as 49th state on January 3, 1959 in the United States of America Office. He was twice appointed acting governor, the first time in 1957 and the second between times 1958 and 1959. Hendrickson was the first governor, who was born in Alaska.

He died in 1983 and was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Juneau.
