Walkenried (Samtgemeinde)

The Walkenried located on the outskirts of the southern Harz in the district of Osterode am Harz. You and the Municipality Hattorf am Harz are the two joint communities in the county. The integrated municipality consists of the municipalities Walk Ried, Wieda and Zorge.

Geography

The Walkenried with its three communities Walk Ried, Wieda and Zorge located in the triangle of highways 4, 27 and 243 at the southern edge of the Harz. Walk Ried and Zorge are state-approved climatic health resorts, Wieda considered as health resort.

The originally forested Walkenrieder swampland was converted from the 12th century by the monks of the Cistercian monastery adjoining Walkenried in a rich pond landscape with fertile farmland. 365 ponds were created by the monks to have a pond for carp harvesting available according to tradition, for every day of the year. Today, however, only 50 of them are detectable. All ponds are located in a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. Some ponds are cultivated by the local angling club.

Walk Ried was first mentioned in 1085. Historical center is the built in 1127 Cistercian monastery Walkenried.

Samtgemeinde Mayor

After some wrangling, the previous treasurer of the velvet municipality Dieter Haberlandt was chosen as the single candidate with 48.69 % of the votes cast on the new integrated municipality mayor on 20 January 2013. A merger with the neighboring town of Bad Sachsa is being considered.

Walk Ried is located on the southern Harz route. At the new station in the town center every hour hold regional trains of DB Regio to Northeim and Nordhausen. The old railway station is a short distance further towards Nordhausen, there ended until the turn of all the passenger trains. Previously began in Walkenried the meter gauge narrow gauge railway Walkenried-Braunlage/Tanne, but which was later replaced by the current bus 470. 1963, the last part of the track was finally shut down.

Public transport

Walk Ried is about 2 bus lines connected with the surrounding area, but only the line 470 also runs on Sundays and public holidays. The line 470 also binds to the outlying district Zorge, while the line 472 and the outlying district Wieda binds. At the train station and in the center at the former monastery is home to small bus stations. Both buses are operated by Hahnemann travel.

Attractions

  • The cultural-historical pond landscape offers a unique resin in the hiking area.
  • The former Cistercian monastery Walkenried from the 12th century was extensively restored and can be visited with an expert guide. In the cloister of the former monastery every summer the Walkenrieder monastery concerts.
