The originally forested Walkenrieder swampland was converted from the 12th century by the monks of the monastery in a rich pond landscape with fertile farmland. 365 ponds were created by the monks to have a pond for carp harvesting available according to tradition, for every day of the year. Today, however, only 50 of them are detectable. All ponds are located in the nature reserve "Prior pond / Sachsensteinblick ". Some ponds are cultivated by the local angling club.

For the Duke of Brunswick, August Wilhelm, a hunting lodge was south of the monastery grounds built by architect Hermann basket country from 1725 to 1730 from demolition stones of the monastery. The solid walls, which include the garden of the castle in the south and west, dating back to the time when the monastic stud Wildenhof was in front of the palace there. The preserved hunting lodge Walk Ried is now privately owned and used as a hotel guest house.

Across Germany, the place was known after the Second World War, when there was here between direction of adjustment and Walkenried on the so-called southern Harz route of one of the most important railway border crossings between the British and the Soviet occupation zone.
