Walter Gramatté

Walter Gramatté ( born January 8, 1897 in Berlin, † February 9, 1929 in Hamburg ) was a German painter, draftsman and printmaker of magical realism. His oil paintings are mainly an expression of Christian longing for redemption and a mystical view of nature. Furthermore Gramatté created portraits. His work was influenced by his experiences in World War I and his illness.

Life and work

He exchanged views with Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt- Rottluff, was intimately connected with Hermann Kasack friend and role model for the figure of the painter Cattell in the 1947 novel, The city behind the current. His whereabouts were Berlin, Hamburg and Hiddensee. From his second wife Sonia, he painted portraits in various operations that during his self-portraits always show his head in the general background. His drawings of war scenes depict the horror represents the landscapes show flowers, trees and thunderstorms.

Walter Gramatté died on 9 February 1929 at the age of 32 years in Hamburg from the effects of intestinal tuberculosis.

His work was counted under the Nazis from 1933 to the " degenerate art ".

Appreciation

Gramatté second wife Sonia married in 1934 the journalist and art historian Ferdinand Eckhardt, then called Sophie -Carmen Eckhardt - Gramatté and lived since 1953 in Winnipeg / Manitoba as well-known musician. In memory of her and Walter Gramatté there was "The Eckhardt - Gramatté Foundation " was founded.

Written estate is located in the German Art Archive in the Germanic National Museum.

The special Rediscovered: Walter Gramatté 1897-1929. in the Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg ( Jenischpark ) took place from 26 October 2008 to 1 February 2009. exhibition was compiled jointly by the Kirchner Museum in Davos and the Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg.

2010 presented the Frankfurt Art Cabinet from parts of the graphic work of Walter Gramatté.

Walter and Sophie -Carmen Eckhardt Gramatté - Gramatté were buried in the cemetery in Berlin- Wilhelmshagen in a designed by Karl Schmidt- Rottluff honorary grave of Berlin.
