Walter Selke

Walter Selke (May 11, 1947 in Hannover ) is a German physicist.

Work

After graduating from the school in Hannover Leibniz and the Master of Science in Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he gained subsequent to the diploma, in 1972, his Ph.D. degree, in early 1975, at Prof.Hans -Jürgen Mikeska at the University of Hannover. This was followed by postdoctoral positions at the University of Saarbrücken, Cornell University and Boston University. In 1981 he became owner of an independent and permanent research position at the Institute for Solid State Research (IFF ) at the Research Centre Jülich. He had 1985/1986 at the Research Center of IBM in Rüschlikon near Zurich held a similar position. Since 1996 he has been Professor of Theoretical Physics at the RWTH Aachen University and since 2008 a member of the Jülich- Aachen Research Alliance ( JARA ).

His main research area is statistical physics, with special consideration of magnetism and surface physics. He is particularly known for his work on commensurable and incommensurable spatially modulated superlattices (especially annni models) in the solid state, with applications in magnetic, ferroelectric, alloy and adsorbate systems.

Walter Selke has published about 150 publications, including several review articles. His co-authors include, among others Kurt Binder, Michael E. Fisher and Valeri Leonidovich Pokrovsky. He has written numerous conferences ( with ) organized, in particular a series of meetings initiated by him with physicists from the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics, which began in 1988 and ended in 1997.

In 2008 he was appointed by the American Physical Society for "Outstanding Referee ".
