History

The Waltz appeared as a dance after the mid-18th century and became fashionable in all walks of life. He supplanted the minuet and had the reputation of the vernacular and Germans against the French Aristocratic and the minuet. Whether he has evolved from southern Germany or Austrian Landler or arose parallel to it, is controversial.

While standing also in triple meter minuet has a baroque regular pulse, the weights in waltz time are unevenly distributed, and the bass usually plays only on the first beat. While the minuet again gives the impression of walking, the Waltz gives the the swing. Until the early 19th century, the waltz tempo very fast ( " Langaus " ) was, in his " classic" period after the Congress of Vienna it leveled off at approximately one second per cycle.

The approximately half as fast version of the dance, the Slow Waltz, was born in the late 19th century.

Famous danceable waltz by Josef Lanner, Johann Strauss (father), his son Johann Strauss (Son ) (eg the Danube Waltz, 1867) as well as by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Many operas and operettas included on stage danced waltz music.

As a folk dance of the waltz was first promoted at the beginning of the thirties, especially in Germany and Austria in the wake of a popular fashion and later as part of a political program for the exclusion of " un-German ".
