Wangaratta

Wangaratta is a city in the Australian state of Victoria and is located about 230 km north-east of Melbourne on the Hume Highway and the railway line between Melbourne and Sydney. It lies at the mouth of the King River in the Ovens River at about 150 meters above sea level and is the capital of the local administrative area in the Rural City of Wangaratta.

In the area of Wangaratta two notorious criminals were in the 19th century home: Dan Morgan, who is buried in the town's cemetery, and Ned Kelly, who lived at nearby Glenrowan and was caught there.

Near the city also lies the ghost town of Eldorado, reminiscent of the gold rush past. Furthermore, the city is the starting point of the Great Alpine Road, which leads to the ski resorts of Victoria. The biggest event in Wangaratta is the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, which attracts thousands of visitors every year since 1990. Furthermore Wangaratta is known as a wine region.

In Wangaratta live about 17,000 inhabitants.
